"Equity Markets Rebound Amid Fluctuating Bond Yields and Credit Spreads"

As we enter into the last quarter of 2026, the overarching narrative shaping market dynamics is the remarkable endurance of equity markets. Despite experiencing a significant degree of volatility in previous quarters, the markets have proven resilient as institutional investors undertake significant sector rotations.

Sector-wise, we're seeing capital shifting from high-growth tech stocks into more defensive sectors - particularly utilities and healthcare. This indicates a more cautious approach due to rising bond yields and widening credit spreads, a sign of potential economic instability. The MCSI World Index, a broad global equity benchmark that represents large and mid-cap equity performance across 23 developed markets, fell by 3.8% in September. However, it has recovered by 2.2% within the first two weeks of October, evidence of this resilience.

On the fixed-income front, yields on the 10-year U.S Treasury, a conventional benchmark for global credit markets, have seen a steady climb, sitting at 2.8%, marking a significant rise from the traditional "lower for longer" trend. This increase has resulted primarily from market pricing in extended tightness in monetary policy connected to rising inflation expectations.

Credit spreads, too, have been affected. The average spread on the Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield Bond Index, a measure of the broad high-yield corporate bond market, has widened to 400 basis points over Treasuries from around 335 at the beginning of the quarter. This expansion is an unmistakable sign of increased risk perception among fixed-income investors, likely due to concerns over potential monetary tightening.

Investors have responded with a sector rotation, reallocating their assets into traditionally safer sectors amidst anticipated periods of heightened uncertainty and volatility. The sustained deployment of capital has acted as a buttress to equity markets, providing a degree of stability during unpredictable market movements.

As we look forward to 2027, the full impact of rising bond yields and expanding credit spreads will likely become more apparent. This situation, combined with effective central bank policy responses, will ultimately determine the endurance of the equity markets. Investors should anticipate this period as a dynamic and uncertain one, requiring risk diversification and portfolio rebalancing. We may well be entering a period of "risk on, risk off" dynamics, characterized by rapid-fire rotations between riskier equities and safer bonds and cash according to prevailing market sentiment. To navigate these waters, investors should remain vigilant and flexible, ready for a potential increase in market volatility.
